When Paka Becomes Part of the Medicine
Avaleha is one of Ayurveda’s most elegant pharmaceutical forms—a semisolid preparation in which the relationship between ingredients, sequence and Paka determines the character of the finished medicine.
To call it an “herbal jam” misses much of its pharmaceutical intelligence.
Depending upon the particular Yoga, manufacture may involve a Kwatha or other liquid preparation, sweetening substances, Sneha, Kalka and Prakshepa Dravyas incorporated at appropriate stages.
The judgement of Paka is particularly important.
Too little processing can leave an unstable preparation. Excessive heating can adversely alter its desired characteristics.
Traditional Paka Lakshana therefore reflects the classical pharmacist’s understanding of the stage at which a preparation has acquired the desired consistency and characteristics.

Ayurveda does not regard a medicinal substance only through the question: "What ingredient is this?"
Dravya possesses its own Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, Prabhava and Karma, but pharmaceutical processing also matters. Through Samskara, substances may be cleaned, purified, triturated, decocted, concentrated, fermented, cooked with Sneha, distilled or subjected to other formulation-specific processes.
That is why the same Dravya appearing in a Churna, Kwatha, Taila, Ghrita or Avaleha should not be assumed to represent an identical pharmaceutical preparation. The Kalpana is part of the intelligence of the medicine.
