Classical References

Three references from the classical tradition, each with source citation.

Reference 1 — Charaka Samhita Chikitsa Sthana (Hridroga context) — Arjuna among the Hridya dravyas

अर्जुनः कफपित्तघ्नो हृद्रोगे च प्रशस्यते । मेदोघ्नः शीतलः कण्ठ्यो व्रणे रक्तविकारनुत् ॥

Arjunaḥ kaphapittaghno hṛdroge ca praśasyate | Medoghnaḥ śītalaḥ kaṇṭhyo vraṇe raktavikāranut ||

"Arjuna pacifies Kapha and Pitta and is praised in disorders of the heart. It reduces excess fat, is cooling, beneficial to the voice, and helps in wounds and disorders of the blood."

  • Charaka documented Arjuna's special affinity for Hridroga — the disorders of the heart — establishing its identity as Ayurveda's cardiac herb

  • Cooling and astringent, traditionally used to reduce excess Meda (fat) and to support the blood

  • The classical foundation of a reputation that has never wavered in two thousand years

Reference 2 — Bhavaprakasha Nighantu Vatadi Varga (Classical Materia Medica of Bhavamishra, 16th century CE)

अर्जुनः शीतलो हृद्यः क्षतक्षयविषापहः । मेदोमेहव्रणान् हन्ति कषायो रक्तपित्तनुत् ॥

Arjunaḥ śītalo hṛdyaḥ kṣatakṣayaviṣāpahaḥ | Medomehavraṇān hanti kaṣāyo raktapittanut ||

"Arjuna is cooling and a cardiac tonic (Hridya). It addresses wasting, injury, and toxins; reduces excess fat and urinary disorders; heals wounds; is astringent, and pacifies Rakta-Pitta."

  • Bhavamishra crowned Arjuna with the title Hridya — "that which is dear to, and good for, the heart"

  • Documented for the heart, healthy fat metabolism, and the integrity of the blood and tissues

  • The herb's astringent, cooling nature is the very basis of its classical cardiac and Pitta-pacifying action

Reference 3 — The Name and the Tree From the classical Nighantu tradition; Kakubha and Nadisarja

नदीसर्जस्तु ककुभो अर्जुनः इन्द्रद्रुरेव च ।

Nadīsarjastu kakubho arjunaḥ indradrureva ca |

"Known as Nadisarja (the river-born), Kakubha, Arjuna, and Indradru."

  • The texts and the tree agree: Arjuna is the Nadisarja, the "river-born" — the tall, white-barked tree that has guarded India's riverbanks for a thousand years

  • Named also Viravriksha, the "hero's tree," echoing the warrior Arjuna of the Mahabharata — strength, steadiness, and courage

  • The same bark ASLI AYURVEDA mills under the spell of Vedic chants — as the Acharyas would recognise it

Short Luxury Description

Of all the herbs in Ayurveda, one alone was given to the heart. Arjuna — the bark of the tall, white tree that guards India's riverbanks — has been the classical heart tonic for two thousand years, praised by Charaka himself. Named for the warrior of the Mahabharata, it carries strength, steadiness, and courage. ASLI AYURVEDA offers the bark as a finely milled Churna in its most authentic, unadulterated form. Grown on traditional Indian soil. Milled under the spell of Vedic chants. Pure as the tradition that revered it.

Full Description

The Heart's Own Herb

In the vast pharmacopoeia of Ayurveda, many herbs touch the heart. Only one belongs to it. Arjuna — Terminalia arjuna — is the Hridya, the cardiac herb, named in the Charaka Samhita and revered ever since as Ayurveda's foremost ally of the heart, both the physical organ and the seat of courage and emotion.

The name is no accident. Arjuna was the great warrior-hero of the Mahabharata, and the tree that bears his name is the Viravriksha — the hero's tree — tall, strong, and white-barked, standing guard along India's rivers as Nadisarja, the river-born. Its bark carries to the heart the very qualities its namesake embodied: strength, steadiness, and resolve.

Why the Churna Form?

  • Classical Ayurveda used Arjuna bark as Churna, Kwatha (decoction), and most famously as Ksheerpaka (cooked in milk) — the powder being the foundation of all three

  • ASLI AYURVEDA Arjuna Powder is the pure stem bark, dried and finely milled to a ritual-ready texture

  • Disperses into warm milk and water — nothing isolated, nothing removed

What Classical Ayurveda Tells Us

  • Documented as Hridya (cardiotonic), Hridaya-Balya (heart-strengthening), and a Rasayana for the cardiovascular system

  • Its rasa is astringent and bitter, its virya cooling, its vipaka pungent — a profile Ayurveda associates with toning the heart tissue, supporting the blood vessels, and pacifying Pitta in the cardiac region

  • Traditionally used as Medohara — supporting healthy fat metabolism and a balanced lipid profile

  • Honoured as Raktastambhana — supporting the integrity of the blood and vessels

The ASLI AYURVEDA Difference

  • Sourced from traditionally grown Arjuna trees in India, where this sacred tree has stood for generations

  • Bark cleaned, dried, and finely milled within our Z Gold Certified Greenroom Infrastructure, under Vedic chants at all times

  • No additives, flow agents, anti-caking compounds, preservatives, bleaching, or irradiation

For the Modern Conscious Consumer

  • Stir into warm milk before bed as the classical Arjuna Ksheerpaka, or take as a warm decoction — a grounding ritual for the heart

  • Vegan. Gluten-Free. Non-GMO. Batch-tested for purity. Rooted in a tradition that has stood for over 5,000 years

This is not a generic heart supplement. This is Hridya — the heart's own herb. And ASLI AYURVEDA is its most authentic custodian.

Usage Rituals

The Classical Method — Arjuna Ksheerpaka Stir ½ teaspoon of Arjuna Powder into one cup of warm milk (or full-fat plant milk) mixed with a little water. Simmer gently on a low flame for 10–15 minutes, allowing the bark's essence to infuse the milk. Strain if desired, cool slightly, and consume — traditionally in the evening. Ksheerpaka is the classical form for delivering Arjuna's heart-strengthening, Pitta-pacifying action.

Morning Ritual — Heart Tonic Stir ½ teaspoon into warm water and sip slowly in the morning. For Kapha types who prefer to avoid milk, the classical alternative is to take the decoction with a little honey (added after cooling).

The Classical Decoction — Arjuna Kwatha Add 1 teaspoon of Arjuna Powder to two cups of water, simmer until reduced by half, strain, and sip warm. A traditional preparation for sustained cardiac support, ideally taken as part of a consistent daily practice.

Seasonal Wisdom

  • Summer (Grishma Ritu): Well-suited — Arjuna's cooling virya supports the heart through the heat, soothing aggravated Pitta.

  • All seasons: As a heart Rasayana, Arjuna is traditionally taken consistently through the year for cumulative support.

  • Winter (Hemanta Ritu): Take as the warm milk Ksheerpaka to balance its cooling nature in the cold months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Distinctly astringent with a bitter edge — the classical Kashaya–Tikta rasa of a genuine bark powder. The astringency mellows considerably when cooked into warm milk as the classical Ksheerpaka, which is the most traditional and palatable way to take it.

  • The classical methods: Arjuna Ksheerpaka (simmered in warm milk); as a Kwatha (decoction simmered in water); or stirred into warm water. Warm milk is the most revered carrier for its heart-supporting action.

  • To a fine, even Churna — the texture classical Ayurveda prescribes for milk decoctions and Kwathas. Fine milling allows the bark's properties to infuse efficiently into warm milk or water. We mill in controlled conditions to preserve its character.

  • Classical texts describe Arjuna churna in doses of approximately ½ to 1 teaspoon (around 3–6 grams) daily, traditionally as Ksheerpaka or decoction. Begin with ½ teaspoon. As Arjuna concerns cardiac wellness, we recommend using it in consultation with a qualified practitioner, especially if you have a heart condition.

  • Traditionally in the evening as the warm milk Ksheerpaka, or in the morning as a warm tonic. As a heart Rasayana, consistency over time matters more than precise timing.

  • A 100% whole stem-bark powder — the classical Churna form. Nothing added, nothing extracted. Standardised extracts isolate single markers; classical Ayurveda always favoured the whole bark for its complete, balanced action. So does ASLI AYURVEDA.

  • The fine Churna is ready to measure and cook into milk or decoct immediately — far more convenient than breaking down hard pieces of whole bark yourself for the classical Ksheerpaka.

  • Particularly beneficial for Pitta and Kapha constitutions, given its cooling, astringent nature — excellent for Pitta-type cardiac stress and Kapha-type cholesterol concerns. Vata types are best advised to take it in warm milk to balance its dry, cooling qualities.

  • Yes. One ingredient: the powdered stem bark of Terminalia arjuna. 100% plant-based, suitable for vegans, naturally gluten-free. Our facility maintains strict segregation protocols to prevent cross-contamination. (The classical Ksheerpaka uses milk, but the powder itself is plant-based — use plant milk if you prefer.)

  • Charaka and the later texts classify it as Hridya — cardiotonic — and Hridaya-Balya — heart-strengthening. For two thousand years it has been Ayurveda's foremost herb for cardiac wellness, both physical and emotional.

  • The tree is called Viravriksha, the "hero's tree," echoing the warrior Arjuna. Just as the warrior embodied strength and steadiness, the bark is traditionally associated with strength, steadiness, and courage of the heart.

  • We strongly recommend consulting your gynaecologist and a qualified Ayurvedic physician before using any herbal powder during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. ASLI AYURVEDA does not recommend self-administered use during pregnancy without professional guidance.

  • In a cool, dry sanctuary away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Seal the pouch immediately after each use. Stored correctly, the powder retains full potency for 24 months from the date of processing.

  • Freshness is best preserved away from air, light, and moisture. Our resealable barrier pouch and amber inner liner are designed to limit oxidation. Reseal fully after each use and keep the scoop dry.

  • Classical synergies: Ashwagandha (for cardiac strength and stress resilience), Brahmi (for calm and emotional steadiness), Pushkarmool (a traditional cardiac companion), Guggulu (for healthy lipid balance), and Pippali (to enhance bioavailability). Warm milk is its classical carrier.

  • Three differences: Form — this is the classical whole-bark Churna, not an isolated extract. Purity — only the bark, no excipients. Ritual — taking Arjuna as Ksheerpaka in warm milk is a classical heart-tonic practice, not a pill routine. That difference matters.

  • Arjuna may influence blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol, and may interact with cardiac, blood-pressure, or blood-thinning medications. If you take any prescription medication — especially for the heart — consult your physician before use. ASLI AYURVEDA products are wellness foods in the classical tradition — not pharmaceutical replacements.

  •  Classical Ayurveda uses Arjuna primarily in adult cardiac preparations. We recommend consulting a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before giving any herbal powder to children under 12.

  • No. Arjuna is a wellness herb in the classical tradition, not a substitute for prescribed cardiac medication. Never stop or alter prescribed medication; use Arjuna only as a complement, and only in consultation with your physician.

  • Sourced from traditionally grown trees practising natural cultivation without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers, with bark harvested sustainably, processed within our Z Gold Certified Greenroom Infrastructure. Batch-wise quality reports are accessible via the QR code on your pouch.

  • No. One ingredient: the powdered stem bark of Terminalia arjuna. The Power of Pure is not a marketing phrase at ASLI AYURVEDA — it is a manufacturing commitment.

  • As a heart Rasayana, Arjuna is traditionally taken consistently over sustained periods for cumulative benefit. Use within a considered routine, ideally with practitioner guidance for ongoing cardiac wellness.

  • We process in small, curated batches. Each pouch carries a processing date and best-before date. The tamper-evident outer seal and heat-sealed inner barrier maintain potency from our facility to your ritual space.
