Ayurvedic pharmaceutics does not rely upon a single method of extraction. Different Kalpanas use different media and processes according to the nature of the Dravya and the intended preparation. Arka represents the distillate tradition within this wider pharmaceutical intelligence.
Selected Dravyas are prepared and subjected to a controlled distillation process, enabling volatile fractions to travel with vapour and subsequently condense into the collected Arka. The quality of the preparation therefore depends upon Dravya identity, preprocessing, soaking where prescribed, heating, distillation, collection and appropriate storage.

Ayurveda does not regard a medicinal substance only through the question: "What ingredient is this?"
Dravya possesses its own Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, Prabhava and Karma, but pharmaceutical processing also matters. Through Samskara, substances may be cleaned, purified, triturated, decocted, concentrated, fermented, cooked with Sneha, distilled or subjected to other formulation-specific processes.
That is why the same Dravya appearing in a Churna, Kwatha, Taila, Ghrita or Avaleha should not be assumed to represent an identical pharmaceutical preparation. The Kalpana is part of the intelligence of the medicine.
