What Are the Doshas in Ayurveda?
In Ayurveda, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha represent the fundamental energies or biological forces that govern both the body and mind. Each person has a unique balance of these energies, known as their Prakriti (constitution), which influences their physical traits, emotional tendencies, and overall health.
Vata – The Energy of Movement
- Elements: Air + Ether
- Qualities: Dry, light, cool, mobile, irregular
- Functions: Vata governs all movement in the body — from the circulation of blood to the flow of thoughts. It is responsible for breathing, muscle movements, nerve impulses, and elimination.
When Balanced: Vata promotes creativity, enthusiasm, and flexibility.
When Imbalanced: It leads to anxiety, dryness, irregular digestion, and joint pain.
Pitta – The Energy of Transformation
- Elements: Fire + Water
- Qualities: Hot, sharp, oily, intense, fiery, acidic
- Functions: Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation in the body. It regulates body temperature, enzyme production, and the conversion of food into energy.
When Balanced: Pitta brings clarity, intelligence, and a strong appetite.
When Imbalanced: It leads to inflammation, irritability, digestive disorders, and skin problems.
Kapha – The Energy of Structure and Lubrication
- Elements: Earth + Water
- Qualities: Heavy, slow, stable, cool, moist
- Functions: Kapha provides structure, stability, and lubrication to the body. It governs the musculoskeletal system, immunity, and fluid balance.
When Balanced: Kapha promotes calmness, endurance, and strength.
When Imbalanced: It leads to lethargy, weight gain, sluggish digestion, and respiratory issues.
