Ghrita occupies an exceptional place in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics. In medicated Ghrita, the lipid medium becomes the basis of a carefully orchestrated pharmaceutical process involving the prescribed Dravyas, Kalka and liquid components where applicable. Its manufacture therefore begins with the quality of the Ghrita itself.
From there, proportion, temperature, duration of heating, Kalka characteristics and recognition of appropriate Paka become important to the finished preparation. A Ghrita cannot be judged merely by its ingredient list — the pharmaceutical journey through which those ingredients become Siddha Ghrita matters.

Ayurveda does not regard a medicinal substance only through the question: "What ingredient is this?"
Dravya possesses its own Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, Prabhava and Karma, but pharmaceutical processing also matters. Through Samskara, substances may be cleaned, purified, triturated, decocted, concentrated, fermented, cooked with Sneha, distilled or subjected to other formulation-specific processes.
That is why the same Dravya appearing in a Churna, Kwatha, Taila, Ghrita or Avaleha should not be assumed to represent an identical pharmaceutical preparation. The Kalpana is part of the intelligence of the medicine.
